Proceeds Benefit the Roslyn Fire Company

About the Roslyn Film Festival

With the knowledge that arts and cultural events can help a town thrive, the Roslyn Film Festival was started by Commissioner Lori Schreiber as part of a revitalization plan for her community.  She, and a very dedicated group of volunteers, began meeting in the Fall of 2006.  The first film festival was in late March 2007—and a tradition was born.

The decision was made to have the event at the Roslyn Firehouse as a benefit for the volunteer firefighters.  In fact, every event that has been sponsored by the Roslyn Events Committee has donated all proceeds to non-profit or charitable organizations.  The Firehouse is vital to the heart of our community, and we want to ensure its continued success.

The format has been consistent.  Independent filmmakers—both local and from other cities and states, have submitted film shorts.  A panel of judges reviewed the films for content, length, and entertainment value, ultimately selecting  about 7 films to be screened the night of the event.  There, the audience is given ballots to choose their favorite film, with trophies and prizes awarded to the top three.

There have been other fun additions to the night.  The Ladies Auxiliary to the Firehouse runs a concession stand featuring a standard movie fare of popcorn, candy, hot dogs, and soda.  There are raffles and door prizes during intermission. All participating filmmakers are encouraged to attend to answer audience questions about their movies while the ballots are being counted.

We have also been fortunate to have some wonderful sponsors over the last few years, who have donated some of the prizes including Whole Food Markets, Giant Food Market, Riviera Pizza, Eckenhoff Auto Group, Specialty Floors, Elite Florist, and Chas’ catering.

And the newest addition to our film festival was a televised red carpet stroll. With our wonderful emcee asking attendees such burning questions as “Who are you wearing?” everyone had a chance to shine.  Our event has grown to a "Standing-Room-Only crowd, so if you're planning to attend this year's festival on Saturday, March 27, 2010, please get there early. We hope to see you then!
